According to a new survey, that’s the fraction of workers with employer-sponsored health benefits that say they’d leave their company if they weren’t satisfied with their health coverage.

In the survey detailed above, researchers interviewed 1,000 U.S. adults whose workplace provided them with health coverage. They spent three days uncovering who was content with their plan, who wasn’t, and where the disconnect originated.

The prevailing factor that determined whether or not these employees felt satisfied with their current health plan?

Comprehensive coverage.

The ability to feel financially protected regardless of the situation is important. In all, 39% of satisfied respondents citing that they appreciated this feature the most. Meanwhile, 40% of dissatisfied employees blame inadequate coverage as the reason behind their frustration.

Does your health plan cover an extensive range of medical services? Today, this could even span to include telehealth or virtual health coaching services that don’t require a patient to visit a traditional doctor’s office.

Or, are employees forced to pay a ton of money out of pocket for anything that falls outside of a standard checkup? If it’s the latter, you could be stifling your employees and allowing frustration to breed.


Of course, one of the top concerns that all employees have about health coverage is how much it will take out of their paycheck.

In fact, of those who reported feeling “not satisfied” with their current plan, a significant 82 percent blame the cost. Meanwhile, 36 percent of those who are satisfied with their plan cite “affordable coverage” as a top benefit.

Ultimately, these workers aren’t only concerned with the numbers as they are right now. They’re also wary about how they might rise in the future. Anticipating price spikes right around the corner, 71 percent of employees are concerned that their health plan costs will soar.

Choice Of Providers

In the middle of an emergency or sudden illness, no one wants to feel limited to a select handful of providers that can take their call.

In the survey, 32 percent of satisfied employees appreciated that their plan offered a wide choice of providers. This way, they could keep most of their activities within the network.

This explains why 22 percent of dissatisfied employees cited feeling agitated about rising out-of-network costs.

Jargon And Forms

It’s no secret that the insurance realm can feel like a foreign language. There are forms to complete, terms to research, and major decisions to make.

For that reason, a top dissatisfaction driver was that the health plan was “too confusing” for those employees to grasp.

This might mean that the forms were disorganized or the timelines weren’t clear. It could also mean the application process was too in-depth, or a range of other pain points.

A way around this issue?

Make the entire process as simple, straightforward and consistent as possible so employees know what to expect. Of those who reported feeling satisfied with their plan, 25% point to its streamlined consistency as the reason why.

Preventative Services

From blood pressure screenings to diet counseling, there is a wide range of preventative services that adults with health insurance could be privy to.

This means they don’t have to visit a doctor only when they’re ill. They can also take advantage of these services to stay in shape and gain deeper insights into their health levels.

Often, it can be difficult to encourage employees to make use of such benefits. That’s why many firms decide to incentivize the step. It’s a smart move, as such incentives are known to positively impact nearly 60 percent of employees. For instance, they might offer days off or bonus pay if a worker completes a screening or completes a health risk assessment.

Does your plan include such extras? If so, they can go a long way in improving your employee satisfaction. The survey showed that 23% of workers expected their plan to include these expert preventative measures.

In addition to prescription drug coverage (51 percent of respondents), employees also want preventative care (47 percent), as well as emergency care (47 percent).

A too-simple plan that doesn’t account for such services could lead to dissatisfaction. Ten percent of employees wished their coverage included more choices, including preventative options.

The Importance Of Ongoing Communication

Findings from a survey can shed light on some of the most pressing concerns that employees have about their employer-provided health care plan. Yet, the most effective way to gauge the effectiveness of your own plan is to talk to your employees directly.

Hold one-on-one meetings and ask them to share honest feedback. Claims numbers can only take you so far, as can industry studies. Along the way, strive to make the details of your plan known to your employees and encourage them to take advantage of its perks.

This might mean creating wellness challenges and adopting gamification to track progress. You can even create an outdoor walking zone where employees can move during their lunch break. Either way, they need to know that you’re listening to their concerns and seeking ways to alleviate them
